In Planted Eyes, I wanted to express the beauty and the suffering of the black race. It was my first oil painting and the fastest portrait – taking me only fifteen hours from a sketch to the very end.

Love is my painting
Silent mountains suffer in pride
As wild spring blends the time
my breath searches heavenly mind.
Blue wind surrounds the sleepy lilacs—
each sound is a sacrifice
I can hear God’s whitest whisper—
Thorns have cut my planted eyes.
